Sarabeth Tucek - Something for You

Label: Sonic Cathedral
Format: 7"
Simple, but stunningly beautiful 7' vinyl ballad from San Francisco-based musician Sarabeth Tucek, who has collaborated recently with Brian Jonestown Massacre frontman Anton Newcombe

Review

Anton Newcombe clearly knows a good thing when he hears it. That said, you would need to be stone deaf not to appreciate the ludicrously beautiful simplicity of a track like ‘Something For You’. The Brian Jonestown Massacre frontman collaborated with Tucek in 2005 on his band’s excellent mini album, 'We Are The Radio'. 'Something For You' appears on that album under the name ‘Seer’, and is without question one the most achingly effective ballads ever written. Just over two minutes long, the intricate melody lingers long after the laser has come to rest, and the haunting feel of the track is augmented by expertly arranged instrumentation and an amazingly disarming, honest and fragile vocal performance. That vocal take appears to be unchanged on this 2007 release, and the title is now (reverted to?) ‘Something For You’, a line that is repeated in the song (as opposed to ‘Seer’, which doesn’t appear). Having heard the Brian Jonestown Massacre version first, this purely acoustic take does lack a little of the subtle musical development of ‘Seer’ that provides its understated power. For those of you who haven’t heard the song at all, you simply, however, must get hold of it. In fact, go out and get both. You won’t be disappointed.
