Morning After Girls - Shadows Evolve

Label: Select Label
Format: CD
Long awaited debut UK album from Australian guitar rockers, the Morning After Girls

Review

The Australian band, the Morning After Girls, that we interviewed earlier in the year finally deliver their first UK album after releasing an Aussie only mini album which consisted of several EPs stuck together for the US market. ’Shadows Evolve’ opens up with a Gothic and feedback-drenched number that is in instrumental called, of course, ‘Introduction’. The title track follows and is bass heavy and lovely and sounds like a combination of classic Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and the Dandy Warhols which this band do so well. ‘ Run for Our Lives’ is like Primal Scream at their best, if only they would try harder, very much in their early 70’s Stones period. ‘Hidden Spaces’ has a 60’s/70’s acoustic attitude based and a hippyish vibe. ‘Always Mine’ is like the Warhols but with a stronger groove, while ‘Lazy Greys’, sounds like a country twanged Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. ‘Straight Thru You’ is a tribute to electric and acoustic rock n roll and has a perfect swagger. Are you listening, Bobby Gillespie ? 'Fireworks’ is a dirty rock ‘n’ roll number, while ‘Interlude’ is slow and folk based. ‘Fall Before Walking’ sounds like a strange combination of the Beatles ‘Revolver’ being played backwards, the soundtrack to Dario Argento's ‘Suspiria’ and the Stone Roses’ ‘I Am the Resurrection’. ‘Slowdown’ is country fuelled and in David Lynch country. ‘High Skies’ has a great swagger, while album closer ‘Chasing Us’ has a true understanding of what rock ‘n’ roll really is.
