Fantastic collection of B-sides and rarities from Sunderland-based indie poppers Field Music
Review
Hailing from Sunderland and featuring the Futureheads original drummer, it’s inevitable that Field Music will receive some rather lazy comparisons. But while this collection of B-sides and rarities has some Futurehead-esque moments – such as the fantastically catchy opener ‘You’re Not Supposed To’-the band are playing very much their own style.
Field Music are often more psychedelic pop than NME-flavoured indie, and at other times a mixture of the two; ‘Breakfast Song’ has a feel similar to the quieter moments on a Pink Floyd record, while album closer ‘Can You See You Anything’ has verses which recall Of Arrowe Hill and a catchy pop chorus that you can imagine going down well with the midday crowd at Glastonbury festival.
My personal favourite on this all-round cracker of a record is ‘Test Your Reaction’, a drum-machine lead track with a chorus I’ve been singing to myself every day for the past week.
This record is an absolutely fantastic collection of indie-pop, and yet more evidence that to find the best music in the UK at the moment, you need to look North East.
