Lupen Crook - Love 80

While Lupen Crook’s second single ‘Halloween’ was something of a novelty record (albeit a very good novelty record) his new single ‘Love 80’ carries on from where his second record, EP ‘Petal Fresh From Road Kill’ left off. The lead track has more of a art-rock feel than Crook’s previous releases, but maintains the darkness and clever lyricism that makes him so appealing as an artist. His fantastic voice is another big draw too. The CD version of the single features B side ‘Washing Blood’, a song much more similar to those found on ‘Petals…’ with Crook accompanying his own creepy vocals on acoustic guitar. The song’s gothic feel would fit in perfectly in a Tim Burton soundtrack. The vinyl version instead has the track ‘Blood-Letter Baby’, a slow, Tom Waits style full band track which calls up images of a smokey 1950s jazz clubs. That is, until it lets loose (if only for a brief moment) in an explosion of crashing drums and thrashing guitars. Both version of the single finish with ‘Junk ‘n’ Jubilee’, a fantastically and nightmarishly skewed track with a clacking rhythm section and bouncy acoustic guitar and the most freakish chorus of people singing tauntingly ‘la-la-la-la-la-la’. I might sleep with the light on tonight.
