Excellent debut single from Slowdive-inspired San Francisco-based five piece Film School
Review
Film School are an American five piece from San Francisco. They toured Britain last year and released one track on a Fierce Panda compilation then. 'On and On' is their proper first single.
The sound on 'On and On' is big in an ambient Slowdive kind of way , but also has a touch of My Bloody Valentine to it, although it is faster and more forward moving than the latter. Singer and guitarist Krayg Burton's vocals, despite his American background, are very English, and recall a post punk Robert Smith. The bass, guitars and drums swell together to create a perfect wall of sound that has been long missing since shoegazing and grunge ended.
'Plus 1' , the first of the B sides, is much slower and has the sombre speed of a Red House Painters number. Drummer Donny Newenhouse's elegant drum work gives Burton and other guitarist Nyles Lannon's sharp guitars further edge.
'February', the second B side, in contrast is a trendy Americana number and sounds like an early experimental REM with its strong country vibe.
