Review

Lovejoy remind me of Enid Blyton's Famous Five. I always imagine that they spend their days exploring caves, catching smugglers and celebrating with a glass of homemade lemonade, whilst at night they’re ace musical adventurers who happily switch between electro and jangle pop making them as versatile as Vaseline; and as a Cosmo girl I can think of no higher commendation. The sophisticated, fun electro pop of 'Strike a Pose' tells us how vacuous fashion is – man. But this synthy sojourn is merely a phase because in truth they’re wedded to their dressing gowns in which they drink startlingly strong tea and imagine a perfect world where rabbits hop freely and relationships are nice. Y’know, what we all do. The difference is that whilst your dressing gown is a rusk-encrusted specimen from Ladybird theirs is from Jaeger and drinks gin martini. What I’m desperately grasping at is that their cover of the Television Personalities'' 'Someone to Share My Life With' is a fine slice of sleek jangle pop where frontman Richard Preece sings that whilst he’s no showy piece of roast beef, he doesn’t like his chicken subservient either. In truth, I suspect he’d be best off investing in a tortoise, or a television – but our record collections would be all the poorer for it.
