Familiar, but comforting indiepop on new single from Cardiff group, the Loves
Review
Ooh proper Rhythm and Blues that my dad would like, this is – none of that bobble-headed Craig David lark, although, incidentally, if the Loves were to have a flava it would be southern fried chicken. They might hail from darkest south Wales but they manage to create a fuzzy, bluesy, dirty Southern twang on their songs.
Listening to them reminds me of sitting in the living room of our maisonette in Kings Norton, Birmingham with my dad reliving his youth in front of the stereo accompanied by some beer and a plate of cheese and biscuits, maybe with a home-made pickled onion on the side – which he inevitably chokes on. That’s real life rock and roll for you. Ah. Brings back memories it does. Y’see there’s something about the Loves that seems rather familiar and although it’s said that familiarity breeds contempt, it’s also rather comforting, so in the meantime I’m looking forward to being in my 50s, listening to the Loves, and choking on pickled onions.
