Slow-burning, impressive punk from latest Epitaph signing, Motion City Soundtrack
Review
The days when Epitaph ruled the world with the finest roster of punk bands are long gone. NOFX have gone to Fat Wreck full time. Rancid are on hiatus. Only Bad Religion are the only act still on prime form who remain Epitaph from the label’s mid nineties glory days. And Drive-Thru has in the mean time emerged with a roster that eclipses even Epitaph’s great history. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. Punk rock has evolved yet again. Sure, Drive-Thru is an amazing label. Anyone who isn’t listening to Finch, New Found Glory, the Starting Line and Midtown right now is pretty out of touch! But Epitaph still serves a function, picking up the pieces and putting out records from the left over bands that don’t really fit in on Drive-Thru or Vagrant. Hot Water Music is a prime example. Never a prospect for fame, they still make incredible music that has to be heard.
Motion Picture Soundtrack are a new name to me, but once again Epitaph has delivered the goods with a band that doesn’t quite fit as punk-pop, emo or hardcore. This single stands out from the pack. Both tracks are really impressive, though somewhat slow burning. They are a serious group and pack their songs with subtle melody, proving that they are talented rather than mere scene chancers! I’d compare them to Finch, Further Seems Forever and Thrice, and that’s very fine company indeed.
