Review
There is always a much warranted level of excitement that surrounds Sleater-Kinney whenever they release a new album. Now on the release of their fourth full-length album: “All Hands on the Bad One”, these women have clearly come into their own. Sleater-Kinney project musically exactly what their label’s name “Kill Rock Stars” implies. “Girl-band”, you say? Well, yes ! But not in the crappy-bubble-gum-media-you’ve-come-a-long-way-baby sense. Sleater-Kinney are true musicians, and their skill improves with every release. An Oregon and Washington-based trio, its line-up consists of Corin Tucker, Carrie Brownstein and Janet Weiss. With musical side projects that also include Quasi, Cadallaca and the Spells, if you’ve never heard of Sleater-Kinney before, you have missed out LARGE. They are exactly what a not-so-new class of American punk rock should be about.
As always, Sleater-Kinney play by their own rules, and the album is full of sarcastic integrity which comes through in lyrics like: “You don’t own the situation, honey / You don’t own the stage / We’re here to join the conversation / And we’re here to raise the stakes”. This is a new brand of Sleater-Kinney punk-fun and it’s totally infectious. With a vocal range that usually erupts at the speed of light from somewhere in the depths of Corin Tucker’s belly, there are more pop harmonies happening with this effort than even usual, which is not to say that Sleater-Kinney don’t still really belt it out also when necessary. Overall though there is a softer tone of voice here sure to win over new devotees who possibly found the vocal stylings too intense on previous albums. The entire album is lyrically and musically very acerbic. With quips like: “Daddy says I got my Momma’s mouth / I’m all about a forked tongue and a dirty house.” their witticisms are, however, the kind that need to be taken with a grain of salt. They’ve come to rock us, and they’re just so good at it.
