Understated beauty. These two words are the best way to describe Norfolk and Western's second full length record, 'Centralia'. A delicate album full of folk instrumentation intertwined with atmospheric tape edits and found sounds. Adam Selzer(the man behind N&W) owns and operates Type Foundry Recording in Portland. Oregon, (where 'Centralia' was recorded) and tours and records with M. Ward(who has a record out on Howe Gelbs OWOM Recordings). Selzer has been recording for years, whether by himself or with others and has a clear understanding of how a record should sound. His voice is desolate and lonesome, and his music evokes the past while embracing the future. The use of lap steel, acoustic guitar and harmonica add to the Neil Youngisms while his addition of background noise and effects bring it all together in a glorious yet quiet listen. In short, an essential album which would fit nicely on the shelf between Nick Drake and Red Red Meat. Intricately played and truly timeless.
