Dixie Ernill is impressed by the release on 10” vinyl of a 2023 radio session for Riley and Coe by reformed 80’s indie pop band The Loft.
Despite never having released an album back in their original lifetime, The Loft were one of the key players in the indie scene of the mid-1980s. The good news is that after a false re-start in the 2000s, the band are back and on the verge of releasing that long- awaited debut album. With the original line-up of Pete Astor, Andy Strickland, Dave Morgan and Bill Prince (not to be mistaken with a tough tackling midfield quartet for a 1970’s second division football team) back together, they recorded this session for Riley and Coe as a precursor to the debut album. Choosing two songs first recorded back in 2005 (‘Beware’ and ‘Ride’), a cover of a Richard Hell song, ‘Time’ that they first covered thirty odd years before and ‘Worm In My Brain’, a Weather Prophets song (the band Astor formed after the initial demise of The Loft) ensured an eclectic mix. The release is beautifully packaged by Precious Recordings of London and will certainly whet the appetite for that forthcoming album.
