Futuristic Zulu trio Phelamncasi join forces with London producer Jesse Hackett
Review
Phelimuncasi are a 'gqom' trio from Durban who lay fat stretches of tribal beats over perilous chants with a sound that roughly files under techno. In the Nyege Nyege Studio in Uganda, Malathon, Makan Nana and Khera teamed up with London producer Jesse Hackett who providespolish with his raw deep bass. Taking turns on Afrofuturism, Phelimuncasi redirects dance culture with machine made moods and highly distinctive beats and music.
From seemingly music computer malfunctions evolve rather fluent rhythms, crafted like, perhaps, graphic novels. Phelimuncasi rap in Zulu but the sounds are universal. 'Izigqinamba' is a fabulous melting pot of choruses over alienating soundscapes and wrought instrumentation. Equally the LP can be described as a sci-fi adventure where sound snippets speed back and forth and space rubble squeaks out compositions of a new dimension. Highly original.
