Reflective comeback from Snow Patrol on their ffrst album in six years

Review

Achieving their 2003 breakthrough with the Top Ten single ‘Run’, Scottish -Northern Irish rock band Snow Patrol made a name for themselves with mostly arena-pleasing anthems. Their latest album,‘The Forest Is The Path’ is their first in six years, with a change in ensemble. Described by lead singer Gary Lightbody as “the biggest sounding record we’ve ever made”, produced by Fraser T. Smith (Adele), their eighth album is a mix of heartfelt ballads, set against forthright, introspective lyrics, the driving themes throughout love and loss of love and vulnerability. Songs to listen out for in this twelve-track album include: the emotive, optimistic ‘This Is The Sound Of Your Voice’: “And Belfast continues, never doubted it wouldn’t/It’s climbed off the canvas more than any other city could’ve/… This is the sound of your voice, it’s the way home to everything”; the catchy ‘The Years That Fall’; the haunting, slow-burning ‘Never Really Tire’ with its scathing lines: “Fuck all your ego/Breathe until it hurts/Tear me into pieces/Home here in the dirt/…you wanna make love/But you don’t love yourself yet/Kill all your heroes/Now there’s nowhere left to hide/Is your money where your mouth is?/Or has something in you died?”; the heartbreaking, sparse, piano-led ‘These Lies’; and the closer, the title track, with its expansive orchestration and singing in unison by all the band. Emotive, reflective, ‘The Forest Is the Path’ is a competent comeback.
