Stripped back exploration of emotion and vulnerability on second solo album from the Stereophonics' Kelly Jones
Review
Founding member, lead singer and guitarist of Welsh rock band Stereophonics, Kelly Jones has brought out a new album, “Inevitable Incredible”, a second solo album, this one predominantly piano-based.
Recorded over six days at Ocean Sound studio on a remote island in Norway, ‘Inevitable Incredible’ is a melodic mix of introspective, melancholy ballads with evocative lyrics informed by personal experience, set against cinematic arrangements. On the record’s inception Jones said: “New music sometimes needs a concentrated space to be appreciated fully in its correct surroundings and context. Many great songs I presented under Stereophonics got overlooked by the anthems and radio favourites….I don’t know fully what this record is or what it means, but if you’re in a place you’re looking or searching for something within you, you may find something within these songs that can connect to you”.
Songs to listen out for in this eight-track collection include: the opener and title track with its dramatic keyboards and crashing waves; the minor chord ‘Time’s Running Away’, with its minimal accompaniment, featuring guest musician Jason Mowery on pedal steel; the uplifting ‘Echowrecked’ with its driving beat; and the world-weary closer ‘The Beast Will Be What The Beast Will Be’.
Emotive, visceral and self-reflective, ‘Inevitable Incredible’ stands in striking contrast to Jones’s previous work
