Assured and spiritual alt. pop on second album from American singer-songwriter Maggie Rogers
Review
Championed by Pharrell Williams, who discovered her when she was a student in New York and nominated for a Grammy for Best New Artist in 2019, the American singer-songwriter Maggie Rogers has released ‘Surrender’, the alt-pop rock follow-up album to her debut ‘Heard It In A Past Life’. This new record, co-produced with UK musician Kid Harpoon (Harry Styles), is an intense, introspective and spiritual exploration of love, relationships, ambition and a wish for a better reality, created while Rogers was working towards her Masters at Harvard Divinity School.
Songs to listen out for in this twelve-track collection include: the emotive opener, the indie-rock ‘Overdrive’ on a tantalizing but tangled relationship; ‘That’s Where I Am’, the insinuating lead single; the catchy, sensual ‘Want Want’ on burning desire and a longing for intimacy; the road anthem about post-lockdown escape ‘Anywhere With You’; the minimalist country-inspired ballad ‘Horses’; 'Be Cool’, a sardonic jibe at herself as a Harvard-educated graduate: “…maybe for just one night/We could listen to Britney”; the breathless stream of consciousness ‘Shatter’, a powerful collaboration with Florence Welch and Mumford and Sons keyboardist Ben Lovett; and the dramatic ‘Symphony’, building to a cathartic release: “Can you live like nothing’s left?/Forget your emptiness/Take a breath”.
‘Surrender’ marks an assured next stage in this charismatic musician’s journey.
