With Daddi Gee, Kode9 recorded the John Peel favourite 'Sign of the Dub' on a ten inch released in early 2004 when Peel's Radio 1 Show counted as the best loved one with the Under 18 radio audience, in spite of its late evening broadcast schedule. Moving from his native Glasgow, Kode9 was about to settle in London at the time to found the Hyperdub label. 'The Jackpot' is the first proper Kode9 release in five years and since his 'Nothing' album. Licensed in Japan a year ago, Kode9 put out an EP with computer game tunes remixes and the speed of sound delivered on that package resonates on 'The Jackpot'. Ballroom mayhem with a deep and heavy dubstep bassline clashes on 'The Jackpot' with techno-like euphoria as if there's no time to lose. Including prog rock organ touches, 'The Jackpot' dwells in velocity. It's certainly not played at the wrong speed and it works well, but it sounds as if two different layers have been sequenced. It is if the organ player is out of breath trying to catch up with the bass. The bass on the flipside 'Rona City Blues' sounds even deeper, yet with fewer twists and less ideas it offers little more than an obligatory exercise. Let's not despair as for now, it's only a digital release and with the help of Kode9's compatriots I keenly await new dimensions to these two tracks on vinyl.
