Review

Myles Cochran created the four tracks on this new EP in his studios in the UK and France. He is currently working with Irish singer Brona McVittie as co-producer and steel guitarist. Renowned Irish cellist Richard Curran collaborates with him on two of the tracks, 'Early Dark' and 'It’s Like This/It’s Like That'. Now based in the UK, Myles Cochran has his roots in the States. He was born and raised in Kentucky and bluegrass and country music were among his earliest influences. These influences continue to inform his music today, and it isn’t surprising to find him bridging that transatlantic gap to work with musicians who have their own roots in traditional Irish music. His music has been given air time on both BBC6 Music and BBC Radio 3, illustrating the appeal of instrumental music that brings together soundscapes and improvisation. He mentions Leo Kottke and John Fahey as inspiration. I can hear echoes of John Martyn and Vini Reilly (Durutti Column) in these pieces. My first listen to these tracks was during a rainstorm, a lovely break from record temperatures. As the torrential rain poured down, I sat by my open door, with the distinctive scent rising from the wet ground. The music was a perfect accompaniment, mysterious and even eerie at times, always atmospheric and very meditative. The first track, 'Love Is As Beautiful as Pizza', sets the tone. 'Early Dark' is a new version of a February release and is described as a Springtime Mix. I just happened to be listening in summer. 'Churrito' carries a flavour of Cochran’s Appalachian roots, with its folky melody. The collection finishes with over nine minutes of 'It’s Like This/It’s Like That', which like John Martyn’s music can take you to another world. This is perfect chill out music for these strange summer evenings. Thank you, Myles.
