Jim White and Marisa Anderson - The Quickening

Label: Thrill Jockey
Format: CD
Captivating guitar and drums improvisation from drummer Jim White and Portland-based composer, multi-instrumentalist and guitarist Marisa Anderson

Review

'Unwritten' and 'November' were recorded in Portland, Oregon while all other tracks were recorded in a vintage studio in Mexico City. Drummer Jim White (Xylouris White, Dirty Three) and Portland-based composer, multi-instrumentalist and guitarist Marisa Anderson, had not rehearsed beforehand. This fresh approach met with craftwomanship during the sessions. Drumming with passion and meticulous tension on 'The Other Christmas Song' and 'Last Days' Jim White does not duel with Marisa Anderson and instead catches the drift of her folky, bluesy but minimal guitar play. The mood can change from calm to fieriness, and back, often leading to epic proportions on 'The Quickening'. Yet '18 to 1' and 'November' portray an intimate beauty, and find Anderson in an introspective mood. The album makes an inspirational auditory experience. Patterns develop which subsequently seem to dissolve in a natural, humane manner. It as if the two have always shared a sense of belonging. Anderson and White only met in 2015 and, after the stint at the Portland studio, went rather unprepared to Mexico. Sonics from drums an guitar can trick you, making one think there's someone playing the bass guitar. Like 1+1=3.
