The Lovely Eggs have created exciting music for unexpectedly quiet times and it’s a welcome blast of fresh air

Review

I’m late to the party with the Lovely Eggs. Friends have been raving about them for a couple of years and I missed the chance to see them talk about their music at Louder Than Words in Manchester last November because I hadn’t caught up. Holly Ross and David Blackwell played their first gig in New York City in 2006. Now they live in Lancaster. They have attitude. They work with the Lancaster Music Co-op. They reject the bullshit of the music business. A section of their website is titled ‘No Fake Encores’. Described as lo-fi psychedelic punk, they set out their approach on their website "This is our band. We do exactly what we like. That’s how it goes when you have your own band. Some of our songs are ten seconds long. Some are four minutes long. We don’t care. Because it doesn’t matter. We have a lot of different sounding songs. Welcome to our world." This defiant attitude could be arrogant, but it comes from a considered and thoughtful place. They are claiming and creating the music business they want to be part of. They’re absolutely right. They have a lot of different sounding songs and they’re all great. I love the titles: 'Long Stem Carnations', 'Insect Repellent', 'Still Second Rate'. I love songs with lists, especially 'You Can Go Now', contemporary culture put in its place. In contrast 'The Mothership' creates a different mood and pace. This is exciting music (I’m not going to make the obvious pun), full of energy and wicked humour. I’m reminded of Iggy Pop, The Fall, X Ray Spex and Goldfrapp as I’m listening, but it’s original because this is the one and only the Lovely Eggs who are making it. This is their sixth album and it has been co-produced and mixed by Dave Fridmann who works with the Flaming Lips. The distinctive artwork for the album and their website is by Casey Raymond. All music has a new relevance in these Covid 19 dominated times and the energy and excitement of this album is very welcome. The final track 'New Dawn' becomes an unexpected wish for the future. I’d hoped to catch up with them in Sheffield at the end of April, but it wasn’t to be. Another band with a cancelled tour and all that that implies. So until the next time, when I won’t be late for the party.
