Solid double disc collection, with old and new songs, from early 70's act, Mungo Jerry
Review
Music that forever captures endless summer: Mungo Jerry’s 'Rewind' collection opener is the classic all time hit that made the band. 'In the Summertime' rocks out in its familiar refrain about touching the sky with women on your mind: “We’re always happy/Life’s for living/That’s our philosophy.” With lyrics about fishing, swimming and good times, it is a welcome moment and the fine and obvious start to 'Rewind' - a two disc collection of old (disc one) and new (disc two).
'Lady Rose' is another jubilant moment- a bit of psychedelia with roots in folk and the earth; a positively upbeat and charming number and Ray Dorset vocal. His band-mates have changed over the years, but Dorset remains the constant. His powerhouse vocals retaining a signature sound.
'You Don’t Have to Be in the Army to Fight in the War' is another earthbound psychedelic nugget. 'Hello Nadine' to is a welcome number with roots in folk, blues and boogie and features a lovely shimmering Dorset vocal.
'Alright, Alright, Alright', another hit, is propulsive. Mungo Jerry utilizes a gumbo of styles from rock to skiffle. 'Wild Love' too is rollicking and energized.
'Sugar Mama', another upbeat tune: “Won’t you let me taste your cherry wine,” the lyric. If 'In the Summertime' is the only Mungo Jerry song you have ever heard, these additional numbers very much follow in that vein.
'Going Up the River' is a fine moment and a highlight here. Mungo Jerry’s retrospective remains essentially spiritually uplifting throughout, bringing to mind eternal endless summer. Disc one ends with a reprise of 'In the Summertime' updated with later day lyrics, citing bands from the Grateful Dead to the Temptations to the Velvet Underground to the Stone Roses.
The new material, disc two is likewise jubilant good times music. 'I’ll Be a Hippy ‘til I Die', about travelling the land, the mountains, the ocean and the hippie dream, if not necessarily new or innovative, is passionate and rocking- catering well to a baby boomer audience. This is still very music a music of the time it arose out of- the 1970s.
It is what you would expect, but does not disappoint- a collection of solid fare from Mungo Jerry.
