Review

What a beautifully pieced together record. I’m one of these guys that love the idea of Hawkwind but find little joy from listening to the band’s back catalogue. Well, it would appear that Electric Eye have the answer for me. ‘Heavy Steps on Desert Floor’ is a perfect example of a band stretching out an idea and, even though its 7 mins 44 seconds run time is a long one, it feels almost as if the band cut it short. When you break the track down though there isn’t that much going on but as clichéd as it sounds Electric Eye take you on a journey and by the time they drop you off at the finish line you feel as if you’ve been somewhere exotic and magical and ancient. It’s a trip in every way. Elsewhere and unusually for a band of this type the songs here are all quite short, averaging around the five minute mark. I like this; it makes the record appear less like a specialist genre treat and more of an everyman-might-like-it type of deal. It’s easier to digest than three sprawling songs that’s for sure, and with songs such as ‘Bless’ featuring some fantastic sprawling guitar work from singer Oystein Braut it’s a record that makes you want to come back time and time again.
