Liam McClair - Honest

Label: Sound Control
Format: CDS
Underwhelming but not unpromising new EP from Manchester-based singer-songwriter, Liam McClair

Review

Liam McClair seems to be moving in the right direction. The Manchester-based singer-songwriter has recently been played by BBC 6Music & XFM, just in time for the release of his EP, 'Honest'. I’m impressed with the production of Honest but I’m unsure how much substance lies within. McClair’s vocals are fine and the songs aren’t bad but they don’t particularly do anything for me. They’re just nice. After two listens the songs seem to merge and the phrase ‘pedestrian pop’ springs to mind. Lyrically McClair needs to do some work because again nothing seems to stand out in this department. For a four-track EP of a new artist that has presumably been touring and writing for a few years you’re hoping for depth, range and potential. At the moment I believe McClair only has this last quality but that’s more than most. 'Alchemy' is my stand-out track and the catchiest song on the record, which I’m sure goes down great live. If this EP teaches us anything it’s that McClair is a talent worth keeping an eye on.

Track Listing:-

1 Honest
2 Alchemy
3 Someday
4 Oh Mary
