Sea Kings - Decadence and Decline

Label: Iffy Folk Records
Format: Download
Well-performed but derivative new download only single from Britpop-influenced Glaswegian band, the Sea Kings

Review

On the evidence presented here on these two tracks, the Sea Kings know what they are doing but sadly it's been done a million times before. Both songs are delivered well, with a sharp delivery and well played and sung. But at their best they really are twenty years too late. This is too far Britpop-edged to cut it in this day and age. ‘Decadence and Decline’ has a decent enough guitar solo that recalls Ocean Colour Scene, and is best played loud to get the most out of it. The Christmas-based B side, ‘Midnight Mass(acre)’,is much sadder and somewhat miserable in its theme, almost like an alternative version of John and Yoko’s ‘Happy Xmas (War is Over)’. It is a sing-a-long about a Christmas charity that takes in strangers for the period, no matter what they have done. The saving grace is its psychedelic backwards guitar towards its end, but really in this day and age they should be trying harder.
