Pennyblackmusic presents...The Galileo 7, Dave Harding (Richmond Fontaine), T.O.Y.S. and Ten With our regular London venue of the Half Moon in Herne Hill temporarily out of commission as it is having its roof repaired, we are moving to the road to the Brixton JAMM for our next gig on Saturday March 16th. THE GALILEO 7 Psych-rockers the Galileo 7 bring to mind all those wonderful 'Nuggets' and 'Pebbles' compilations that collected obscure garage rock and psychedelia classics from the 60s, not to mention the acid-soaked 13th Floor Elevators at their finest. Formed in the Medway region of south east England, and named after an episode of ‘Star Trek’ (at least, we ‘re assuming that’s where the name comes from), The Galileo 7 includes Allan Crockford, whose CV includes time in notable garage-rock acts such as thee Headcoats (featuring fellow Medway resident Billy Childish), the Prisoners and the Solarflares. The prolific Crockford has somehow found time to record two albums with the Galileo 7, ‘Are We Having Fun Yet?’ and ‘Staring at the Sound’, both of which fuse aforementioned garage rock back-to-basics aesthetics with a psychedelic tinge. http://www.thegalileo7.fourfour.com DAVE HARDING (RICHMOND FONTAINE) A member of the great alt-country act Richmond Fontaine, who formed in Portland, Oregon, in 1994, Dave Harding came up with that band’s moniker after a fellow American, “a burned out hippy”, helped him get his malfunctioning car working while Harding was stuck in a desert in Mexico. Since then, Richmond Fontaine have released a substantial discography (ten albums alone), with the latest, 'The High Country', having been released in 2011 to great acclaim. For this show, however, Harding will be showcasing his solo side, which has echoes of his main band, M. Ward, Uncle Tupelo, and indeed Pennyblackmusic gig regulars Willard Grant Conspiracy, while occupying its own space that mines classic folk, country, blues, bluegrass, and rock. Harding has released two albums on El Cortez Records, 'Across the Road', and 'You Came Through”, both of which feature a sprawling cast of guest musicians. The latter album, intriguingly, also contains 'Shores of Cornwall', a dedication to a certain English county from which Harding can trace some of his ancestry. http://youcamethrough.blogspot.dk http://daveharding.bandcamp.com T.O.Y.S. Putting some energy back on the indie dancefloor (wherever that is these days), T.O.Y.S. (not to be confused with various other bands with the word Toy) are a trio split between Leeds and London who employ keyboard (permanently on the same setting), fuzz bass, and drums. Along the way, they somehow manage to synthesise indiepop, lo-fi, and Krautrock into an instantly danceable whole. Their self-titled debut album, released on Dufflecoat Records, contains classics such as 'Love Hurts' and 'When I Was a T.O.Y.' that burrow their way into your brain and refuse to let go. The follow-up, ‘T.O.Y.S. 2’, has been released on Oddbox Records, and seen the band subsequently play with the likes of Piano Magic and Allo Darlin’, as well as at London indiepop institution Librarians Wanted. http://toysthebandblog.wordpress.com http://toystheband.bandcamp.com TEN Haunting and beautiful, Ten (or TEN) is the brainchild of Leeds resident Dominic Deane, who has hooked up with a number of collaborators – some based in the city, others based in London – to release magnificent, haunting instrumental music, embellished by strings and glockenspiel. Lying somewhere between post-rock and much of the ‘modern classical’ composers who inhabit the Erased Tapes label, TEN’s pastoral mix of acoustic instruments and subtle electronics have led to tours with the likes Esmerine (featuring members of Godspeed You! Black Emperor), Stuart Braithwaite (Mogwai) and Lucky Dragons. Their sprawling soundscapes can also be found on a number of stunning EPs. http://www.tenband.co.uk http://tenthegreat.bandcamp.com 8pm Saturday 16th March 2013 Brixton Jamm, 261 Brixton Road, London, SW9 6LH. £5 in advance from http://www.wegottickets.com/event/209692 £6 on the door
