Refreshingly eclectic debut album album from the Naytronix, the pyschedelic-influenced solo project of Tune-Yards bassist, Nate Brenner
Review
Recorded in California, ‘Dirty Glow’ at times has definitely leanings towards 60's American heroes the Doors, as it is laden with organs and blissed out moments throughout. The opening track ‘Hangin’ Out’ pretty much lives up to the phrase, sounding akin to the organs on some sort of 1940’s English seaside resort full of charm. ‘Evil Dancer’ is another one for you dead head types to get your rainbow ears round as well if that’s your “bag”.
‘In the Summer’ takes Naytronix in a mildly different direction from the whole Doors semi-psychedelic vibe. When the drums kick in with a real attitude to them, it doesn’t sound like a hip-hop song per-se but does sound like something that would be at home being used on a hip-hop record.
Together with tunes like ‘Lead the Way’ and ‘Robotic’ I got a vibe that made me think this sounded like the sort of music that Jack White would make were he to relocate to a sunny Californian beach to do his work.
‘Nightmare’ out of nowhere seems to draw heavily on the 70’s soul movement, and does a damn fine job of giving you the same feeling.‘Are You Looking for a Good Time?’ also takes you on a slight tangent as well, and this tangent to me sounded like a version of Mumford and Sons from outer space, which is cool by me.
Although the references mentioned here could be construed as making ‘Dirty Glow’ out to be a disjointed album, it is anything but. It flows beautifully throughout, and is refreshingly eclectic without feeling like Naytronix tried to fit lots in for the sake of it. A real trip of an album.
