Janice Graham Band - Murder

Label: Acid Jazz
Format: 7"
Hard-hitting ska-influenced rock on debut single from young Manchester-based group Janice Graham band, who seem potential contenders for major success

Review

Janice Graham Band is another group to emerge from the musical production line that is Manchester. Yet while current bands such as Airship and the Heartbreaks continue to carry the flame of indie guitar music that has been passed down over the last 25 years from the Smiths via the likes of the Stone Roses and the Courteeners, Janice Graham Band plough a different furrow. Their sound has roots in the grimy underworld with ska and hip hop being the main reference points, though a dash of trumpet from Josh Hunt also brings a jazz feel to proceedings. Singer Joe Jones delivers some hard hitting lyrics in a Mike Skinner/Kid British way, and I’m sure fans of either would be quite taken by this record. Indeed local luminaries such as Mani and Clint Boon have already nailed their colours to JGB’s mast, but as an indie-pop kind of guy it doesn’t do it for me. That’s purely down to taste of course, so I wouldn’t back against these lads making it big.
