Anthemic and uplifting sun drenched pop on new single vinyl and download only single from Australian band, the Holidays
Review
If you asked most people to name an Australian artist, Jason Donovan may spring to mind on more than one occasion. Luckily, despite hailing from the same continent, this minor similarity is the only thing (musically speaking at least) which indie-popsters the Holidays have in common with the former 'Neighbours' star, as is definitely proved on latest single, ‘Golden Sky’.
An anthemic, uplifting tune, it sees the band employing the afrobeat instrumentation of Vampire Weekend, and merging it with the slightly otherworldly quality of Passion Pit, in a riotous explosion of bongos and guitar riffs which recall the work of a band somewhat closer to home, Northern Ireland’s Two Door Cinema Club.
While the mumbled vocals of the verses may be reminiscent of the hazy, stoner-pop scene emerging in the States, the song is thankfully lacking in the grating production which has plagued the trend for lo-fi, the crisp finish and clean-cut hooks, the summery, sun drenched melodies calling to mind recent output from bands such as the Drums.
‘Golden Sky’ will inspire you to fire up the Barbie, treat yourself to an ice cream, soak up the Sun. The last embers of Summer may be dying away, but, fortunately, there are still bands like The Holidays to keep them burning that little bit longer
