Impressive second EP from versatile London-based rock 'n' roll outfit, Projekt

Review

4-piece rock 'n'roll UK band Projekt started reeling and rolling in early 2009 at Tommy Flynn’s, Camden. Their cut ‘Desert Storm’ was track of the week on the BBC’s ‘London Calling.’ Their first single ‘Ocean Passage’ became available as a free download. After only three weeks, on the Tourdates Unsigned chart Passage, it reached number 1 and, as of early April, retains that position. Projekt draw their material from extensive jam sessions; each member contributing a unique voice. The recurring theme of travel has motivated them, especially in ‘Ocean Passage’, ‘Desert Storm’ and now ‘The Compass.’ ’Frontman Rob Powell adds, “We want to take people on a journey and I think our songs can do that judging by the reaction so far.” Theiur new EP contains three songs. ‘Compass’ is recorded twice. The first version resembles the music of the stark, but enigmatic David Bowie. “It’s a dirty disease” is repeated emphatically and a hybrid of steamy guitar and electronica lurk beneath. “I got my compass back on track” builds up to a fever pitch. The song is then recast in a more mystical light. This version has an exciting no-holds-barred, riff-heavy demeanor. Sounds swirl and vibrate, blend then tear apart to create a fascinating fusion. In the midst of these cuts is a country ballad. Powell sings convincingly “I would never run away” providing a temporary contrast to their image of travel-happy jammers. “I bury my head in the sinking sand,” Powell continues, with his strong, rhapsodic voice. Plaintive blues harp adds a primitive and sad touch. Projekt have a lot to contribute, and style-wise, their “compass” could point in any number of musical directions. As their vision grows, how exciting it’ll be to discover where their future travels take them.
