Lovely-sounding debut solo album from EG White, who has co-written songs with both Duffy and Adele
Review
EG is EG White, who co-wrote ‘Warwick Avenue’ with Duffy and ‘Chasing Pavements’ with Adele.
‘Adventure Man’, which is his debut solo album, opens with ‘But California’. This is classic stripped-down singer/songwriter material in the style of Mark Mulcahy,
‘Weird Friendless Kid’ is very pop friendly and was co-written with Louis Elliot of Rialto. ‘My People’ is very gentle and piano-based. It is sung with a husky vocal by White in a narrative way.
‘Til the End’ is quite jazzy, while ‘Pay Later’, which was co-written with Neil Hannon of the Divine Comedy, has a weird, jagged flow and sounds like a slow T Rex or early Plastic Ono Band track.
‘Broke’ is a very soulful pop number, while ‘There's Going to Be Someone’ is sad and acoustic and will be a housewives’ favourite.
‘Whatever Makes You Sick’ has a big pop sound upon which White sounds like an updated Bowie. ‘Time to Fall’ is a lush singer-songwriter number, which is beautifully played and arranged, while ‘If You Run’ was co-written with Neil Hannon and is a gentle toe tapper.
‘Pull Me Through’ is sung with Alice Temple and is a song about survival. ‘Our Turn will Come’ is short and charming and recalls the Beach Boys’‘Pet Sounds’.
A lovely-sounding debut album.
