Often lacklustre compilation from American industrial group Filter, the project of ex-Nine Inch Nails guitarist, who unfortunately became more and more disappointing with each new release
Review
Richard Patrick and co at the start seemed to promise so much but never really delivered. It’s strange then that they have released a retrospective. It’s a real pity because this band seemed to get weaker with each album.
If you’re a fan of this band you don’t need to buy this album. If you haven't heard of them before you're better off buying their 1995 debut, 'Short Bus', a lot of which is on here. For me this band was always a one album band and it seemed with each album after that they got less inventive and more commercial.
There are exceptions, however, as Filter always seemed to keep their best music for soundtracks with stand out tracks including the excellent 'Jurassitol' from the fine 'Crow 2' soundtrack and the excellent '(Can’t You) Trip Like I Do' from the otherwise awful soundtrack to the awful movie 'Spawn'.
For me, however, it is ever a guilty pleasure admitting to loving the ‘hit’, the ridiculously smaltzy, 'Take a Picture' from the album 'Title of Record'.
Always attached with the stigma of being in Nine Inch Nails, Richard Patrick has never been able to shake this off.
