Label: Transgressive Records
Format: CD
Excellent and eclectic debut album from London-based new wave/pop band burningpilot

Review

London-based new wave/pop band burningpilot’s debut album opens with recent single, the ‘Girlfriend in a Coma’-like 'Accelerate’ ‘Case History’, which follows, is quite poppy, coming over like a combination of the Fall and the Kaiser Chiefs. ‘Automatic Text Generator’ is very fast and punky, sounding like the Cure at the time of their 1989 ‘Disintegration’ album. ‘Entertainment’ is again like the Cure, this this time though in the late 1970s or early 1980s and has a cool new wave flow to it. ‘French Frank’ has a touch of of early Franz Ferdinard, and a vocal from singer Michael James that sounds like Phil Oakey from the Human League or Jon King from the Gang of Four. ‘Cold Caller’ is again like early era the Cure, while ‘Starter Pack’ also sounds like the early Cure, but this time jamming with one of the 2 Tone acts. ‘White Clipping’ is much slower, with a crawl of a vocal from Michael that sounds like Damon Albarn on downers. ‘Moving Models’ has a vocal like Jack's Anthony Reynolds, and is slow paced number, while the final track, ‘International Poster Campaign’ is very fast, like early Pulp with an added dose of Elvis Costello thrown in. An excellent and eclectic first album.
