Angela Desveaux - The Mighty Ship

Label: Thrill Jockey
Format: CD
Classic-sounding Americana on exceptional second album from country and folk-influenced Montreal-based singer-songwriter Angela Desveaux

Review

The follow-up to her debut 'Wandering Eyes' immediately sounds familiar but Angela Desveaux's new album for Thrill Jockey does bring back memories. Pretty much everything on 'The Mighty Ship' is performed in a firm and outspoken manner. Angela Desveaux's clear voice subsequently comes on top of a solid performance, and her near perfect songwriting adds further to the suspicion of a great past behind her. This Montreal-based singer grew up on a healthy diet of classic country rock music. Bluesy licks notwithstanding, 'The Mighty Ship' soon set sail for the shores of Americaña. 'Shape You' serves as sufficient proof for the highlights at stake on 'The Mighty Ship'. But consistence is the outstanding quality on the album. Angela's tales of love and deception find a warm bed of traditional country and folk music.

Wandering Eyes (2006)
Understated, occasionally upbeat rootsy Americana from the Montreal-born Angela Desveaux, which, while impressive, in an overcrowded market of female singer-songwriters may not be strong enough to stand out from the pack
