James Yorkston - When the Haar Rolls In

Label: Domino Records
Format: CD
Immaculate, matured folk rock on fourth album from James Yorkston, which proves to be his most accomplished recording to date

Review

A haar is one of the archaic nautical Dutch words still in use in British languages, for the chilly fog coming from the lowlands and Scandinavia across the North Sea. James Yorkston's new album is much more of a warm shelter against it than a tribute to icy spells hitting the east coast of Scotland and the North. "We say goodbye to Summer (...) us fiddlers and dancers" sums up the comfort, that Yorkston's most accomplished effort yet, offers. Yorkston is accompanied by established folk musicians which results in an immaculately arranged and performed album. Nine matured songs that will surely move you as Autumn sets in. 'Midnight Feast' features a full-blown orchestration and a melodica that stresses the slightly exotic touch on the album. The rich arrangements include mandolin, xylophone and flute. These suit Yorkston's smooth, pure and fine vocals very well. Even the frail and fragile songs come out strong. 'When The Haar Rolls In' ought to get Yorkston's a much higher profile. It is a very sane choice for a surprise Christmas present.
