Distinctive, but unfortunately uncommercial fifth album from Scottish psychedelic-folk act Pumajaw, whose singer Pinkie McLure's multi-octave vocals are in a unique class of their own
Review
Here’s a thought, Aguilera and Carey. When you’re not peddling faux-heartfelt clichés to the emotionally feeble, why not do a Pinkie McClure and attempt something constructive with your multi-octave voices ? Like releasing an album of crooning, electronically pepped-up folk music with an avant-electronics geek? And allowing your mountain stream-pure voice to roam leisurely over compositions new and traditional, breathing new life into the old stuff and making the new ones sound old as the hills.
Imagine the heady feeling of diving head-first into ‘Waiting Room Part Two’ and ‘Horseshoe Nail’, two bacchanalian revelries-cum-mesmerising dance drones; the creepy thrill of performing old-time child murder ballad ‘Lamkin’, which perversely happens to be a breezy waltz; the sheer off-the-wall weirdness of singing lyrics like, "a glass eye sees more when it’s rolling around."
What’s that? None of them would work as lucrative Pepsi jingles? Sorry. Our mistake. Looks like you’re on your own, Pinkie.
