Psapp - Tiger, My Friend

Label: Domino Records
Format: CD
Catchy and quirky indiepop on reissue of 2005 debut album from British/German electronic duo, Psaap

Review

The re-release of Psapp’s first album, 'Tiger My Friend', reminds us just how creative this band is. The debut is a little less polished than the follow up album, 'All I Ever Wanted', but this is by no means a bad thing. Quirky sounds and instruments are a running theme in Psapp’s music with squeaky toys, bells and whistles scattered through the album. Originally released in 2005, after Carim Clasmann and Galia Durant came together and decided to create music together, the album is a gentle journey across a musical landscape of winding streams and grassy hills. The album is very consistent and without a weak track, but occasionally a riff on the keyboard or a string section will stand out from the crowd. 'Calm Down' has one such riff weaving through Galia’s warm rich vocals. The song was written with Ash’s Tim Whelan. 'Velvet Pony' is another ear catcher with dancing keyboard notes and a sweet melody. No Psapp album would be complete without a few cat sounds and 'About Fun' delivers just that along with Mario landesque computer sounds that for a moment take you back to the 80's. If you missed the album first time around this is the perfect introduction to a band who are creating original music in their own unique way.
