You can tell that the Twilight Sad are from Glasgow straight away. There's no mistaking the accent of singer James Graham. Even the music evokes a rainy night in Glasgow, whilst wandering its streets and looking for a pub to sit in and have a drink. 'And She Would Darken the Memory' sounds to me like a song of a dying relationship, a couple disillusioned with one another whining and fighting. Does it descend into physical violence? It certainly sounds like it. The guitars swirl, like the rain blowing into the gutters, with all the emptiness of this lost relationship. This really is like old style indie music. Think the House of Love but darker. Who knows what it is about, but 'That Summer, At Home I Had Become The Invisible Boy', its B side, is deeply disturbing. Its lyrics tell of the kids being on fire in the bedroom and people outside looking in. Is it about a teenage arsonist? Attacking a loving family like the one he never had? Or am I just reading too much into this song that gets angrier as it goes on? Whatever it's about, it offers more jangling guitars, but with a discordant edge to it. Brilliant.
