‘Cold and Wet’ sees Will Oldham’s outfit stripped down to the basics of a trio for this gentle plea. It blends shades of Americana, a country tinged Bob Dylan and a hint of Syd Barrett at his most straightforward. ‘Cold and Wet’ ambles along not really going anywhere as if out for a Sunday drive in the country. And it’s all the better for it. It is hardly startling but worth repeated listening. As a postscript, also worth a mention is the BBC One Music session take on ‘Buried Treasure’. It’s rough and ready and rather scruffy round the edges but contains bucketloads of enthusiasm. Lovely.
