'Brutal powerhouse of metallic hardcore energy" and "an essential purchase for metal-heads and hardcore fanatics" from hard rock tour de force Death by Stereo
Review
Let’s get straight to the point – Death For Life is a tour de force of rock power. A brutal powerhouse of metallic hardcore energy, this album should put Death By Stereo high on the love lists of serious noise fans.
From ‘Don’t Piss on My Neck and Tell Me It’s Raining’ to ‘Binge/Purge’ guttural shouting contrasts with melodic backing vocals and razor edged riffs and bass lines.
As you might expect from a release with this much death in the title, it can appear all a bit bleak. “Blood spills, terror fills, world is on its knees” runs 'W.W.J.D.?’ ‘Middle Fingers’ screams about how "You were built to be destroyed, we were built to attack!"
Death For Life is a long way from the self-pitying pop-metal being pedalled relentlessly. The band have kept the punk elements that keep hardcore relevant, while fusing it with the accessibility of modern metal production. It would unfair to imply that this was in anyway less true to the hardcore ethos, but it is divested of that genre’s often-present inaccessibility.
Obviously, with this release being on Epitaph, Death For Life has had some serious production money thrown at it. But unlike some of Epitaph’s pure punk album’s – where this lavishness detracts from the rawness – here it works to the music advantage channelling the anger but not letting it become oppressive.
For all the rage and noise, this remains an album that is easy to love. An essential purchase for metal-heads and hardcore fanatics and all who really love their rock loud.
