Blues Explosion - Crunchy

Label: Mute Records
Format: CDS
Energetic, but staid blues rock on latest single from the long-serving Jon Spencer Blues Explosion

Review

This is the latest single from the new Jon Spencer Blues Explosion album ‘Damage’, and is typical Blues Explosion: energetic blues rock with a prominent beat, over which Jon Spencer does his best Elvis impression. It’s quite a nice, summery tune, good to put on at a barbecue or a garden party. It does get you moving, but you can’t help feeling that the Blues Explosion might be running out of steam. Not that this is a bad song. It certainly isn’t, but it’s quite a safe song as well. Nothing new has been added to their sound. It is easy to get the impression that the Blues Explosion are just going through the motions a bit these days, but to be in that state and still be able to write good tunes is pretty impressive in its own right. Hopefully, the Blues Explosion will find a way to get their spark back again. In the meantime, Blues Explosion fans will not be disappointed with ‘Crunchy’.
