Fire Divine - Its All A Blur

Label: Deep Elm
Format: CD
Strong "blustery, empassioned indie rock" on debut EP from recent Deep Elm signing, the Fire Divine

Review

Over four tracks on their debut EP, the Fire Divine show that they have the promise to be a really, really good band. This five-piece band (Ian Musgrove – vocals, Tad Dynakowski – guitar, Alin Ashraf – bass, Bob Carpenter – guitar, Jordan Crouse – drums) adequately captures the spirit of being a young music fan in the early twenty first century. The band has plenty of experience, featuring former members of the June Spirit and A Life Once Lost, and they play a decent variation on the blustery, empassioned indie rock sound so prevalent at the moment. The first track, 'Clark And Rightwood', kicks things off nicely with a big guitar riff and nice interplay between the two guitarists. 'Reputation Outlives Application' is a bit more melodic, but also sounds a lot more frantic with the rhythm section tearing it up in the background. My favourite song is probably 'We Ride On Sunbeams', which has a soaring melody, crunching guitars and some effective harmonies from the backing vocalists. It reminds one of a slightly more rocking Weezer, which is no bad thing! Final track, 'Smoke And Mirrors' is the most imaginative, starting out as a straightahead hardcore track with aggressive vocals, pounding guitars and drums and a big bass sound, but then lets it go with a combination of melodic guitar solos and piano. It’s a great way to end the EP. Each song bristles with genuine intensity, the sound of a band that is the real deal, that cares about music. The Fire Divine are a band with sufficient energy and ability to go far, and the imagination to keep expanding their sound. My advice is to get in there early with this CD.
