Raw and abrasive, and here to put "the punk back into punk-rock", the Distillers, who are fronted by Brody Armstrong, wife of Rancid's Tim Armstrong, prove that there is still more to the genre these days than just "goofy dances and childish humour".
Review
In these days of Sum41, you'd be forgiven for thinking that punk had folded inside out, becoming what it fought against - a money-making proposition with its raw energy and anger sucked and replaced by goofy dances and childish humour.
Never fear for the Distillers are here to put the punk back into punk-rock. Fronted by Brody Armstrong, wife of Rancid man Tim Armstrong, it is unsurprising that the Distillers are on Rancid's Hellcat label, and that there's a bit of Rancid in the Distillers sound, which also takes in elements of old-school Californian and British punk.
The best thing about 'Sing Sing Death House' is the fact that it manages to be raw and abrasive while still being catchy. You'll find yourself shouting along to songs like 'The Young Crazed Peeling', 'Young Girl' and their ilk before you know it. Armstrong's vocals throughout, are a cross between a raging Courtney Love and a female version of Tim Armstrong.
Keeping within the Rancid family tradition, most of the songs on 'Sing Sing Death House' are true stories of broken homes and struggles against the odds, while on 'The Young Crazed Peeling' Armstrong tells her life story, leaving little to the imagination.
A truly great real punk record for the new century.
