Debut album by Australia's Ides of Space is "a very strong album that fans of noise pop, the harder shoegazer sound, and spacerock will connect with very easily."
Review
The space rock revival of '98 was a rather exciting, albeit short lived happening. Bands like the Swells, 7% Solution, Sianspheric, and Jessica Bailiff seemed to come out of nowhere with their heavily effected and layered guitar attack. They were poised to take "spacerock" to another level, but then they disappeared as quickly as they had come.
Australia's Ides of Space would have fitted into the picture quite well back then. Their music has elements of both the spacerock and shoegazer sound, but isn't accurately described by either of those terms. The wall of sound guitars, the subdued vocals, the quiet parts, and the loud are all there. Song structure, melody, and a pop sense are there too. The music effortlessly goes from dense to sparse and remains balanced at all times.
This is a very strong album that fans of noise pop, the harder shoegazer sound, and spacerock will connect with very easily. That's not to say there isn't something more than just the past present on the album. Ides of Space don't just retrace the path that others have taken. They're starting where the others left off and allowing us to follow.
