'The Setting Sun and Its Satellites' is the first full-length album from The Firebird Band, which features in its line-up several former members of Joan of Arc, Pilot in Hiatus and Braid Fans of Braid should not expect this to be any kind of Braid album though. This is more like Emo goes Electro with a synth and drum machine, and singer Chris Broach’s voice reminds me more of the Archers of Loaf or the Pixies’ Frank Black, with a little bit of the Cure thing kind of going on in there...Sounds weird? How it works I don’t really know, but it just does. All of which makes this generally pretty catchy pop stuff, but to put your finger on what all this truly reminds you of is a hard task indeed...there’s lots going on here, and it is in many ways a mish-mash of many things that seem to switch mid-song from one style to quite another. This is easily one of the more creative, contemporary and stimulating albums I’ve heard in awhile.
