Former Pulp guitarist Richard Hawley, now 57, is fiercely proud of his working class roots in Sheffield. His latest album, “In This City They Call You Love”, reaffirms his affection for the former steel city with a series of powerful ballads that build on the success of his Olivier Award-winning West End musical, “Standing At Sky's Edge”. “People” is a beautifully simple love letter to Sheffield – although many of the new album's musical influences are definitely American. On “Have Love” Hawley croons rather like Roy Orbison and his style on “Have Love” is reminiscent of the early Everly Brothers. But Richard Hawley is very much his own man and his strong Yorkshire personality shines through on every track. “In This City They Call You Love” is a fine album with some elegiac and very memorable songs.
