Allan Clarke - I'll Never Forget

Label: BMG
Format: CD
Classy second solo album in four years from former Hollies singer Allan Clarke which finds him reuinited with old bandmate Graham Nash

Review

‘I'll Never Forget’ is Allan Clarke's second solo album in four years and, as the title suggests, there's a nostalgic feel to this record. The former Hollies singer reunites with old bandmate Graham Nash on several tracks. Clarke also sings of his wife Jennifer - the Jennifer in Hollies' hi ‘Jennifer Eccles’, Eccles being the surname of Rose Eccles, Graham Nash's first wife - on the heartfelt country song, ‘The Presence Of You’. At 81, Clarke may not still hit the high notes he once reached on ‘The Air That I Breathe’ and on many more top-selling Hollies songs from the band's 1960s heyday when Tony Hicks, Nash and Clarke and the band were hugely successful - but his now deeper baritone is nicely augmented by Nash's harmonies on several tracks, including ‘Buddy's Back’ - a reflective song written by Nash about the pair's early days around Manchester. Former Hollies' keyboardist Francis Haines also features on the new album - and Clarke delves into Nashville styles on ‘You Shine A Light’ and on jaunty break-up song ‘You Didn't Like It’ before becoming philosophical again with the more serious ‘Who Am I’. ‘I'll Never Forget’ is a classy and highly professional album - neatly combining nostalgic country and pop. Allan Clarke's many remaining fans are sure to be very happy with it.
