Impressive return-to-form on fifth album from Nottingham-born singer-songwriter Jake Bugg
Review
Jake Bugg had his first taste of fame at an early age. The Nottingham singer was 18 when his self-titled debut album, packed with rockabilly-based tunes, topped the UK charts in 2012. His career, however, subsequently slowed and then stalled further after he tried his luck with dance and hip-hop on his 2016 album, 'On My One'.
Now 27, Jake Bugg seems to be back on track again with his fifth album, 'Saturday Night, Sunday Morning'. The record's title is a nod to the gritty 1958 novel by Nottingham author Alan Sillitoe that was turned into a hugely successful kitchen-sink film starring Albert Finney. - Bugg is very proud of his Nottingham roots! - However there isn't much grit or grime evident in his new release! The album portrays a far glossier Jake Bugg than we've seen before and it has numerous state-of-the-art adornments.
Bugg has opted to write more collaboratively in creating 'Saturday Night, Sunday Morning' and he has worked with a number of seasoned hit-makers. The change of style works well and 'Kiss Like The Sun' and gospel-tinged 'All I Need' are especially impressive and well-produced tracks.. Bugg, however, also shines on the slower tracks. He sings in a higher than usual register on the melodramatic piano-with-strings 'Downtown' and is beautifully backed by Andrew Watt's George Harrison-like guitar on the attractive ballad, 'Scene'.
Jake Bugg is scheduled to tour the UK next Spring - starting at Newcastle City Hall on 14 March.
