Fabulous and versatile sixth album from 60's-influenced Californian singer-songwriter Kelley Stoltz
Review
Kelley Stoltz is a busy chap. In addition to knocking one of the albums of the year with this album he is also touring with his long time heroes Echo and the Bunnymen and also as part of the Company Men, the backing band for Chuck Prophet's wife, Stephanie Finch.
'To Dreamers' is perfect, It opens with 'Rock 'n' Roll With Me', which starts off with a cool Merseybeat/Kinks-like groove. It is a song to get you to shake your mop top to, and get you to do the Twist. It has an edge of Talking Heads too.
'Pinecone' is 12 string guitar joy. It has an element of solo George Harrison and is both relaxed and dreamy. 'Keep the Flame' in contrast sounds like the Bunnymen on a total 60's freak out, but with a different style vocalist as Kelley doesn't croon like Ian McCulloch.
'Fire Escape', is another 60's freak out number. It recalls the 13th Floor Elevators, but also has a touch of the Seeds thrown in for added measure. 'I Remember, You Were Wild' is a song to make you think of the summer, while 'Ventriloquist' has an offbeat, avant-garde feel, but at the same time is very pleasant on the ear.
Psychedelic number, 'Baby, I Got News for You', is a cover of a 1965 song by Big Boy Pete, whoo plays on this cover. 'Little Girl' is another eccentric number, but again has a strong Bunnymen feel to it.
I Like, I Like' has a different groove to it and is like an oddball Roxy Music, full of brass and weird twists. 'August' is sung through rose tinted glasses, very 60s and has elements of both Donovan and the Fab 4 when they were starting to get more druggy.
'Love Let Me In Again' is full of summer sunshine in a Kinks like style. 'Bottle Up' recalls Paul McCartney in the way that he is always excellent, telling stories about people in his songs. This is a great ending to a fabulous record.
