Excellent solo release from former Olivia Tremor Control keyboardist, Pete Erhick is "a fine psych/pop record which will appeal to any fans of the genre. If" you think Beatles and Beach Boys jamming with the Pink Floyd... you're in the right area. "
Review
Another excellent release from the ashes of the late great Olivia Tremor Control. Pete Erchick (who played keyboards in OTC) has released a fine psych/pop record which will appeal to any fans of the genre. The instrumentation is wonderfully mixed and the piano and organ lines are particularly appealing. You really can't go wrong with a cover of Mancini's 'Moon River' (which sounds like a transmission from deep space).
It really amazes me just how talented these Athenites are as they continue to release album after album of fuzzed-out folk and ambient collage.
There is (of course!) an entire cast of Elephant 6 and related characters who lend their amazing talents to the album. Think Beatles and Beach Boys jamming with the Pink Floyd and you're in the right area. But instead of being a mere copycat, Pipes take their influences and present a finely sculpted soundscape of tangerine dreams and marmalade kisses.
What with brilliant debuts from OTC offshoots Circulatory System (also reviewed in this edition !) and the Sunshine Fix already on the racks, Pipes You See, Pipes You Don't is another welcome addition.
