Professionally produced and well performed but bland sixth album from New Jersey trio The Jonas Brothers
Review
The sixth studio album from the Jonas Brothers trio is rather presumptuously titled ‘The Album’ - which perhaps rather devalues the previous five!
‘The Album’ opens promisingly with ‘Miracle’, a track driven by wah-wah guitar and finger-popping funk beats. “Jersey” yells Joe Jonas during this number - presumably to underline the three brothers' small-town roots in the Garden State. ‘Waffle House’ sees them recommending a trip to a favourite breakfast joint as a remedy for sibling squabbles.
The influence of various cultural icons is apparent throughout the new record. ‘Montana Sky’ features sun-kissed 1970s-style pop reminiscent of The Eagles, ‘Americana’ name-checks Bruce Springsteen, Jay-Z and James Dean. ‘Wings’ isn't intended as a reference to Paul McCartney's band but there are striking musical similarities - and the closing track, ‘Walls’ is a big ballad that will be popular on tour..... and it clearly owes something to Oasis.
“The Album” is professionally produced (by Jon Bellion) and well performed - but it lacks a little in originality - and soul!
