Nostalgic and romantic debut album up-and-coming US singer-songwriter Lauren Reno which presents a fresh contemporary take on country music
Review
Still in her twenties, up-and-coming US singer-songwriter Lauren Reno, daughter of a gold miner of Cherokee descent, has released her debut album.
A mix of fast and slow songs, humorous and serious, ‘Gold Rush’, recorded in Nashville, recounts stories she heard while working at a local gold mine. The record pays homage to her Nevada heritage and is imprinted by nostalgia and romance, underpinned by a steely Southern grit. Co-writer and producer, husband Ben Reno described the album as a “’traveling record’ – a listening experience one can enjoy on a journey across the country. It’s got something for everyone – those drawn to 90s country, Tom Petty and Bob Dylan, and the vocal styles of Carrie Underwood and Martina McBride.”
Stand-out songs in this eleven-track collection include: the catchy opener, the flirtatious ‘Bottle’s Worth A Dime’; the upbeat country ‘Crooked Smile’; the first single from the album ‘Don’t Think’; the plaintive ‘Just A You And Me’; soaring ballad ‘Me And The Neon’; the solo ‘See You Again’, cast in a traditional mode; the stripped-back, acoustic, emotive ‘Prone To Lose It’; and ‘White Lies’ with its insidious chorus.
“My goal with this album is just to touch people like the music that has touched me… it’s a vulnerable place to be in – but it’s like, my story that I wrote about could be the one thing that one person needs to hear.”
Propelled by powerful vocals and sensitive lyrics, ‘Gold Rush’ presents a fresh contemporary take on country music.
